Every great wedding venue has a story, and behind every story is a person with a vision, a dream, and a love for creating unforgettable experiences. At Riverbend Estate, that person is me, Karri Jablonski. While Riverbend may now stand as a timeless estate welcoming couples and families into its embrace, my journey to becoming the owner has been filled with chapters of career paths, family choices, and a long-standing passion for bringing people together.
My Early Career Journey
My professional story began back in 1997 when I started working at Johnson Controls, an automotive car parts factory. For twelve years, from 1997 to 2009, I worked on the line, gaining firsthand experience in the value of hard work, consistency, and teamwork. Those years taught me discipline and endurance, and while the work was demanding, it shaped me in ways that continue to influence my approach to business ownership today. Knowing how every role contributes to the bigger picture became an important lesson I still carry with me.
After my time there, I pursued further education at Davenport College, where I earned my Associate’s degree in Healthcare Business Management. Education has always been important to me, and this degree gave me a deeper understanding of how to manage both people and processes, something I didn’t realize at the time would be essential for the future I was walking toward.
A Season for Family
After graduation, I took a position at Life EMS, eager to step into the healthcare field. While I enjoyed the work, I found myself being pulled in another direction. With young children at home and the precious days of school drop-offs, after-school activities, and bedtime routines slipping by all too quickly, I knew I wanted to be more present for them. It was one of the most important decisions of my life: to step away from a demanding role and come work in the offices of our family business.
That season gave me what I wanted most, time. Time to be home, time to show up for my kids during those fleeting school years, and time to embrace the everyday moments that become the sweetest memories. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade that choice for anything. It gave me balance, and it reminded me that life is about creating moments, both big and small.
A Passion for Celebrations
While my professional background may sound very business-oriented, my heart has always been pulled toward something a little more creative: event planning. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for hosting and planning parties. Whether it was birthdays, anniversaries, or family gatherings, I loved every detail—decorating, organizing, coordinating, and seeing the joy on people’s faces when everything came together.
It wasn’t just about the logistics for me; it was about creating spaces where memories could flourish. I believe celebrations are some of the most meaningful ways we mark the chapters of our lives, and being part of that has always brought me joy. For years, it was simply a passion, something I poured into whenever I could. But by 2022, I started to wonder, what if I could take that passion and turn it into something more?
The Spark of an Idea
In 2022, I began researching the idea of venue ownership. I spent nearly a year diving into what it would take. Studying the industry, understanding the responsibilities, and exploring the possibilities. It was an exciting time, filled with dreaming and planning, but also with plenty of careful thought. Owning a wedding and event venue is no small task, and I wanted to be sure I was ready for the challenge.
Toward the end of that year, I stumbled across a listing for Riverbend Estate. Nestled along the bend of the Kalamazoo River, it immediately captured my heart. There was something about the land, the mansion, and the sheer potential of the property that spoke to me. I could picture the laughter of families, the joy of couples, and the beauty of celebrations filling the air. It was everything I had been looking for, and more.
Bringing Riverbend to Life
Purchasing Riverbend Estate wasn’t just a business decision; it was a calling. The property had once been an equestrian farm, rich with history and character. My vision was to preserve that timeless feel while transforming it into a place where people could gather, celebrate, and make memories that would last for generations.
From June 2023, when the purchase was finalized, to August 2024, when construction was completed, it was a whirlwind of planning, building, and bringing that vision to life. Every decision, from architectural details to the flow of the estate, was made with couples and families in mind. I wanted Riverbend Estate to feel both grand and welcoming, elegant yet warm, and above all, like a place where love stories belong.
A Philosophy of Hospitality
For me, Riverbend Estate is more than just a venue. It’s a reflection of the values I’ve carried throughout my life and career: commitment, balance, passion, and care for others. My time at Johnson Controls taught me how to organize and manage. My education at Davenport gave me the business foundation I needed. My years at Life EMS reminded me of the importance of service. And my season at home with my kids instilled in me the belief that every moment matters.
All of those experiences come together here, in this place. At Riverbend, it’s not just about renting a space. It’s about creating an environment where couples feel seen, where families feel cared for, and where celebrations unfold with beauty and ease.
Looking Ahead
As the owner of Riverbend Estate, my greatest joy is walking alongside couples as they plan one of the most important days of their lives. I love hearing their stories, learning about their dreams, and watching as those dreams come to life within the estate’s walls and across its riverbend views. Every wedding is unique, and that’s what makes this work so special.
Looking ahead, I see Riverbend Estate not just as a venue, but as a legacy—a place where countless love stories will be celebrated, where families will gather, and where laughter will echo through the halls for years to come. My hope is that when people step onto the property, they feel the care, passion, and love that went into making it what it is today.
When you choose Riverbend Estate, you’re not just choosing a venue; you’re stepping into a story. A story that began with a dreamer who believed in the power of celebrations and the beauty of creating lasting memories. My journey may have started in a factory and healthcare settings, but it found its true home here, in the heart of West Michigan, on the Kalamazoo River. I am honored to share this space with you, and I cannot wait to see the stories that unfold here in the years to come.
